7% Biodiversity Increase - PPN Bioacoustic Monitoring Results
Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our PPN bioacoustic monitoring programme. Many of our members were contributing for the first time, while others are in their second year and third set of results!
This vital programme is our way of assessing what is happening across the People's Park for Nature.
It's a straw poll of our collective success if you like. As a movement of people committed to restoring nature this is the barometer of our progress as we attempt to create more space for nature across over 1,000+ acres of land now in the PPN.
Results
So let's start with some fantastic news:
Across our five sites monitored last spring and this spring we have seen a 7% increase in bird and bat biodiversity.
And an incredible 67% increase in bird and bat vocalisations (a rough proxy for bird and bat population density).
Every single site showed an increase of both! This is such wonderful news and a sign that we should keep pushing to improve habitats across our wild spaces.
There are lots of other great stories to unpick across our sites.
The headline has to go to the one recording of the very rare Barbastelle Bat.
This species is very poorly understood with a large range, so recordings are tricky. Let's hope for more in future.
Other wonderful finds include Ringed Plover, Oystercatcher, Willow Warbler and Spotted Flycatcher. And how wonderful that Nightingales and Barn Owls were recorded at several sites, along with Leisler's Bat.
We’d like to invite you all to a webinar looking more closely at the monitoring results and a chance for everybody to discuss what more we can do to bring back nature across our wonderful green spaces: add to your by downloading this .ics file calendar here. Taking place on Thursday 16 July, 7.30-8.30pm.
